Wintergreen essential oil has a sweet and fresh aroma like mint and is pale yellow or pinkish yellow in colour.
When Wintergreen is rubbed on the paining spot, this oil is readily absorbed through the skin and the presence of Methyl Salicylate induces numbness and a sort of anaesthetic effect in the nerves present in that area. Chemical composition
The main chemical components are 98% methyl salicylate, but may also contain triacontane, formaldehyde, gaultheriline and varies other aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols.
Extraction
Our Wintergreen Essential Oil originates from America and is steam distilled from the leaves of the plant following maceration in warm water. Methyl salicylate, the main chemical constituent of the oil, is not present in the plant until formed by enzymatic action from a glycoside within the leaves as they are macerated in warm water.
Precautions
The oil should only be used topically and in very low dilution, do not use on pregnant women, children, or broken skin. Wintergreen Essential Oil should be avoided by anyone sensitive or allergic to aspirin or with reduced liver function or kidney damage..
